The Drum & Bass Thread (formally Drum 'n' Bass is dead?)
The Drum & Bass Thread (formally Drum 'n' Bass is dead?) Posted on: 19.08.2008 by Random X Every now and than, a musical genres foremost poet or pioneer will come forth claiming the style is dead. We've already seen it in punk, hip hop, metal, rock and opera already. Stupidest thing even, that this seems to be some kind of "retro- cycle" that passes along every decade. With the coming of styles like dubstep amongst others, purists are really keen on claiming that these styles are no derative or subgenre of our beloved DnB. Better yet, they utter the words "DnB is dead!" If your own creative impulses can't cope with a style any longer, why claim it is dead in the first place? Couldn't it just evolve into other (sub)styles? No, kill your idols instead! There seems to be no better way to start something new, than completely destroy any relations with the past. How can a genre with high BPM rates be dead, while comparing it to the ever so low BPM rates of the ever so vivid dubstep? Ofcourse, BPM rates are not a factor in this case, but people listening and enjoying DnB are. There are still heaps and heaps of bass-heads still jumping their shoes to the sounds of d&b pioneers as Krush, Bukem, Dom & Roland and all others still producing. Agreed that the old spirit needs to be revived. Still, it's no reason to don the old lass after that much joy she has given us. Drum and Bass is dead? It seems ever so vibrant as it was in 1996! | |

Herlinda Burross 15.05.2009 | I've always been intrested in DnB, always get excited when I hear it at a party, but finding out more about it has always felt a bit overwhelming. So can you outline for me some (preferably numerous) artists I need to check out and epic dnb anthems i need to know?! I want to be able to DJ dnb! Just stick to the more traditional stuff, wild beats and great basslines & melodies, liquid funk can wait. |

I'm much more into Liquid and Intelligent than Neuro or Techstep... I like those dark and bad genres very much, but it can't beat really good Liquid IMO!

Apolonia Skibinski 13.05.2009 | Morbido im from England, and yeah the steppa dancing seems to be a european thing.I have a lot of friends from the US and where DnB hasnt been around so long there, they tend not care on the genre. But its been around so long here dj's and party go'ers get a wide choice. The jungle/jump up style was around from the start, so many of us older guys (im 30) progressed. But the younger generations still see it as fresh.I play liqiud and intelligent aswell as dark tech, darkcore w/e you wanna call it, but clubs rarely ever mix jungle/jump up with those, if they do its a seperate room/club. Heres some steppa if ya never seen it, when they get going n mashed in a club its so funny. They normally end up hitting someone with their flailing arms and get a beating lmao. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYBte...eature=related lmao http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W22gpBv00gg This never fails for me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVsC1...eature=related |

Andriy Gavrysh 13.05.2009 | FL Studio is quite a nice app, a friend of mine uses it for his production and actually i like it a lot. grats for your remix once again - even if it wasn't so hard work it's feeling quite nice and that is the most important part of music i believe! GUVNA - where are you from? does this apply for the USA? i'm from austria and the scene here (as far as i found out by now) is a little bit different: ppl do like jungle and jump up - you have to watch out a bit though what you play, but in general they like these subgenres. nobody does steppa dancing here though, and i'm really happy about it! the ppl listening to dnb are from about 15 to 30/40 and mostly they don't care what type of dnb you play as long as it fits in the overall atmosphere. i'm 24 and i do like jungle (esp. reggae/ragga jungle as my spinning roots are in reggae/ragga) and jump up, but i also do like subgenres like neuro a lot - ppl like neuro too, but most of the time you can't play neuro only, you have to bring them slowly to neuro (starting with liquid, going to jump up and progressing further and further until you're at neuro and techstep). it's funny how different the scenes in different countries can be |
sinior cliff 13.05.2009 | lol at dirty hipsters hardstepping to dnb. |
Apolonia Skibinski 13.05.2009 | Getting back to subject, DnB is far from dead, its expanded all over the world!!.All thats happened is its split into sub genre's, which is a very good thing imo.I admit some of these are getting very tired, tracks from the likes of Magistrate and Taxman ect are all the same, with all originality gone.It was the diversity of DnB that made it so strong, but these mainstream producers, churning out the same old samples remixed is doing it damage.Theres so many good producers out there who are relatively unkown, Mark Tailor made an awesome album as did Matar recently.I have been into DnB from its conception, i was a big fan of Ltj Bukem and the early heavy bass. But now ive progressed to the darker techno influenced stuff of Current Value, Limewax, Counterstrike. The jungle/jump up scene is pretty much for kids nowadays, clubs are full of these 15-20yr old chavs in caps lol. They all do that stupid steppa dancing to, they make me lmao flailing around. In the old days it was just the 2's n 4's you danced to, but they make it look like riverdance lol. |
